Master's Degree in Tourism and Hospitality

The Academic Master's Degree Program in Tourism and Hospitality preferably trains professors and researchers, with a focus on the study of the tourism phenomenon, as well as organizations and their theories, in an interdisciplinary perspective. Efforts aimed at reading, research, and scientific production are required from the student to obtain a Master's degree.

The project to create the Master's Course in Tourism and Hospitality was approved by the Council for Teaching, Research, and Extension (Resolution Nº 013/CEPE/97) and in June of 1997 and, in the same year, it was approved by the University Council (Resolution Nº 017/Cun/97). Its operation began in August 1997, marked by its innovative and pioneering character in the region where it operates.

The creation of the Stricto sensu Graduate Course in Tourism and Hospitality - Academic Master's Degree (a pioneer in the country) represented, on the one hand, the unfolding of the experience accumulated until then through activities of training human resources in the area of tourism. On the other hand, it was supported by data from a survey carried out by the Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas - FIPE, in 1995, which found that, in the country, undergraduate courses in Tourism, although showing a quantitative growth, suffered from the reduced training of technical staff necessary for its qualitative development, a situation that persists to the present day.

In order to meet this demand, its teaching and research proposal is focused both on scientific studies of the phenomenon of tourism in the national territory and on its ramifications and exchanges of students, professors and researchers in the area abroad.



Curricular structure

The Academic Master's Program in Administration lasts 24 months. Given the academic profile of the program, students are expected to be present on Mondays and Tuesdays to participate in classes, research activities, seminars and debates.

Credits

Each student must take at least 30 (thirty) credits, as follows:

• 13 (thirteen) credits in compulsory disciplines,

• 11 (eleven) elective credits and

• 06 (six) credits related to the elaboration of the Master’s Thesis.


Number of credits

• 24 (twenty-four) credits in disciplines; and

• 6 (six) credits for the Master’s Thesis.

• Total: 30 (thirty) credits

Lines of Research

Central theme: Planning and Management of Tourism and Hospitality

Phenomena of planning and management of Tourism and Hospitality are approached, considering the role of tourist destinations and management of tourist companies in society and in the tourist space. It also considers the importance of new destinations, relationships and forms of management necessary to attract resources for the tourist trade to achieve its goals and ensure sustainable survival.​

Given the complexity of the topic, there are two lines of research:

Tourism Destination Plannin​g
This line seeks to develop studies about the impacts and transformations in the places and communities where the tourist activity takes place. The interface with the disciplines is related to the planning and management process of tourism development, with a view to associating the activity with urban and regional development. In this sense, cultural, environmental, socio-spatial, ecological and landscape aspects and their potential and limitations for tourism use are analyzed, whether they are attractions or inputs related to t​he basic infrastructure.

This line emphasizes the development of basic and applied research in the area of organizations that work in Tourism and Hospitality, whether public, private or in the third sector. The interface between the disciplines allows approaches through which the study of management strategies and technologies is carried out in a systemic way. Within this line, the emphasis on organizations that work in Tourism and Hospitality demands an effort to understand how they behave in relation to their environment, from the strategy and organizational technology point of view, seeking to analyze the reasons for their performance.
